For parents of babies born in April 2007

Amethyst is now 9.5 months, but I've just been slack about getting her update done!

I had her weighed on the 23rd (when she was 9 months), and she was 9.85kg (21lbs 11oz) then, so I'm guessing she's over the 10kg (22lbs) mark now. She's still loving her solids, and has found meat to be an interesting thing. I started adding that into her diet in the last few weeks, and she's enjoyed chewing on some strips of chicken that I'd cooked, and likes it in her food. I've also started trying her on some of the foods I'll have, which she's not so sure about, but I think that's because there's a lot more flavour going on than what she's used to.

On the 24th, she started crawling, which I found very exciting! Though it's more swimming than crawling, as she'd pull herself across the floor using her arms only. That's gotta take some strong muscle work! As of today, though, she started crawling properly, on hands and knees! She's still wobbly with it, and doesn't go fast, but she's getting it! I find it funny that she started this today, because yesterday I took her up to the child care centre she'll be going to (as of Monday, just one day a week so far), so she could get used to the room. When some of the other babies were crawling, I told her that's how to do it - and today she started it! I've decided to put her into care because she's such a social baby, and I think she'll really enjoy being with the other kids (she loves it when her cousins come over). I will also really enjoy the extra uninterrupted sleep I'll hopefully get to have! I don't have a partner who can take her while I sleep, so I'm looking forward to having a bit of a break!

She's got four teeth now, with numbers five and six sliding down from the top, and will probably cut through in the next week or so. You have to be really quick about getting your fingers (or other body parts!) out of her mouth when she decides she wants to chew!

Now, onto the photos!Collapse )

I'll be flying up to Darwin in April, so we can celebrate her birthday with her father and his family. It's a four hour flight, and we'll be flying out at 9pm, and arriving at 1am - has anyone got any advice on how best to fly with a one year old? She'll have to be on my lap for the flight, unless there's a spare seat next to me, which I hope happens! Then I can hopefully lie that seat back and have her sleep in that. But I'll be happy to hear any tips and hints that you've got!

9 months and 2 teeth. [Jan. 28th, 2008|09:43 am]
For parents of babies born in April 2007

My baby turned 9 months old on Friday.  He was born April 25th at 2:22am.  And now I'm sitting here wondering when exactly someone switched out the squalling little baby that could barely lift his own head for this little man that's just raring to go get into everything he can possibly lay his hands on.  And why didn't I notice?

We had our 9 month checkup Friday too...

 At BirthAt 9 Months
Height20 inches 28 inches (standing)
Weight8lb, 6ozapprox. 24 lbs
(he had to use the big people scale!)

Oh yes, and he has TWO teeth now.  The second one popped through like magic Thursday afternoon while Alex was a Grandma's.  Now you don't see it, now you do!  Teething wasn't bad at all, but once the second one was through, we had 3 terrible nights.  No idea what that was about, but he slept well last night so *knocks on wood* I'm hoping its over.

So, at 9 months old, Alex is crawling everywhere.  Pulling himself to standing on everything he can lay his hands on.  Cruising when he wants to, though rarely along furniture - he loves his walking toy, or, pushing the small cooler along the kitchen floor.

Still no words, though lots of sounds.  He says babababa, dadadada, mamamama, nanana, mum, every combination you can think of.  He even ends some syllables with hard "D" or "T" sounds.  He loves to shriek when he's happy, especially at the cat (who by the way STILL hasn't figured out how to jump over the baby gate, so often finds himself trapped in the livingroom with this little person that insists on crawling after him and grabbing fistfuls of fur.)

He eats all the Heinz beginner level babyfoods, and seems to like them all.  We're going to start him on the non-meat 6 month ones as soon as the beginners are gone from the pantry.  I'd rather delay meat, since I've heard that carnivores' diapers are worse than vegetarians.  Is that possible?  Ew.  Anyway, he usually eats one small jar of babyfood a day - half for lunch, the other half for supper, and still gets at least 5, 6 oz bottles of formula a day.  He's certainly not lacking in the food department.  The kid is built like a brick uh....playhouse.   Infact, he's only got one set of clothes left - in about 2 months time we're going to have very little to dress him in.  Dang kid won't stop growing!

His head is still a little flat on the back, but its harder now that he's moving around so much for us to keep him sleeping on his side.  When I go to get him from his crib (unless he's woken for a bottle in the middle of the night) he's usually sitting up, playing, if not standing and shaking the crib rail.

There's so much more I could say, but instead I'll leave you with some almost-9-month

tummy time/rolling over [Aug. 30th, 2007|01:02 pm]
For parents of babies born in April 2007

[Current Mood |contentcontent]

Hello everyone!

It seems my little guy HATES tummy time. He will cry and cry. Any tips on how to make tummy time a happier experience for him?

Also, he is 5 months old now and hasn't rolled over yet. I know, all babies develop at a different pace and hit milestones at different ages. I was just curious as to how many of your babies have rolled over so far. Also, are there any games or anything that I can do to try and encourage him. He's a big boy (I'm thinking about 20 pounds now!) so that might be why.

TIA :)

ETA: Also, what type of surface do you usually do tummy time on? We have all hard floors here (no carpet) so we just bought a rug where he has tummy time. Before that it was on our bed or on the Baby Einstein activity mat.

schedules, food, etc. [Aug. 24th, 2007|12:32 am]
For parents of babies born in April 2007

[Current Mood |contentcontent]

Hello All!

I was just checking out a section on babycenter about schedules for our age group (http://boards.babycenter.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?nav=messages&webtag=bcus1175&tid=25317). I was curious about this anyway. A lot of moms on the April 07 section had schedules, where pretty much every day was the same. Also, seems like a lot of moms have already started solids of some sort (whether it's rice cereal, bananas, etc.) Well, I only read the first few pages.

So my question...do you have a schedule every day? Have you started any type of solids yet?

We aren't on a strict schedule, but we've sort of fallen into:

Getting up sometime between 9 and 10, nursing, and then he sometimes falls back asleep for a little while why I have breakfast. Once he's up, we play for a little bit (have been trying to get more tummy time in, much to Dylan's dismay), then he'll nurse and take a nap (varies in length). Once he's up, we'll usually nurse again, depending on how long the nap was and if he's hungry or not. Then we'll usually go out to the park or for a walk or something. When we get back, he usually wants to eat, unless he eats while we're out. Then Daddy gets home and has playtime with Dylan. After his daddy and I eat, we usually have some playtime, then a bath, then nurse/hang out/wind down for bed.

As I said, not strict, but that's what a lot of days have been like lately. We haven't started any type of solid foods yet. I plan on waiting until he's 6 1/2 or 7 months old and starting with bananas or applesauce. My pediatrician hasn't said anything about it yet, so we'll see. Right now he's exclusively breastfed and it's working great.

I could never be on a feeding schedule, as Dylan eats when he's hungry. Some days it's more than others, but it seems to work best, feeding on demand.

I hope everyone's doing great! :)

5 months old! [Aug. 23rd, 2007|02:45 pm]
For parents of babies born in April 2007

Lucy is 5 months and 4 days old!  She is growing so fast it's really amazing me!  She was born at 6 lbs. 6 oz, and was 5 lbs. 10 oz.  when we brought her home from the hospital.  Now she is 16 lbs. 8 oz. !!

She is such a sweet, content little girl.  She very rarely has cried, but she does whine when she wants something.  Her favorite pastime is watching her crazy brothers run around and she has become very vocal in response to them!  She "talks" and "talks" at them and sometimes it actually sounds like words.  She will learn how to make a new sound and then go on all day making the same sound.  If she wakes up at night she remembers she can make the sound and then sit up half the night going "ba ba boooo ba ba boooo".

Lenae - 4 month checkup [Aug. 23rd, 2007|01:58 pm]
For parents of babies born in April 2007

Lenae had her 4 month checkup yesterday (it always ends up much later than the 13th).

Weight:  13 lbs, 6 oz  (up from 10lbs 8oz at 2 months) - 50th percentile
Height:  25 3/4 inches (up from 23 3/4 inches at 2 months) - 90th percentile
Head circumference:  16 1/4 inches (up from 15 inches).

Dr. J says she is on track developmentally and hitting her milestones in an expected fashion.  She was a chatty, happy gal for her exam, until she got the two vaccination shots (DTaP and Hib).  She cried, soothed easily when I picked her up, then saw the nurse over my shoulder and *screamed* at her.  Lil gal has a temper, let me tell you.

She's been prescribed Axid for her reflux since it's been getting worse lately.  Dr. J thinks that her supplemental formula is a trigger for the reflux (like citrus or spicy foods can be for an adult) and that it's going to happen no matter what brand/type we use.  We're starting out with Axid and if she continues to have problems with heartburn we may try something like kiddie Mylanta.  She's nursing every 2 hours all night long still, probably due to heartburn.

Breastfeeding's going as well as it can with my low supply.  She gets 1/2 to 3/4 of her bottles as breastmilk, although I had the dread AF rear her ugly, ugly head this month and tanked my supply for a few days.

She rolled over stomach-to-back for the first time last Thursday (August 16th), but Bear wasn't 100% sure since she had just woken from a nap.  Friday, she rolled and rolled and has been loving the talent ever since.  She's getting pretty good with head control and loves to sit in someone's lap and look around.

Bear needs to upload some more baby pics, but here's my current favorite:

4 month update! [Aug. 22nd, 2007|08:18 pm]
For parents of babies born in April 2007

[Current Mood |draineddrained]

I took Natalie to the pediatrician yesterday for her 4 month check-up. Everything went pretty well... minus the yucky shots she had to get at the end, she wasn't a huge fan of those and actually has a nasty bruise on one of her thighs. She is definitely getting her bottom two teeth in which I pretty much knew already, and she is quite miserable from it. She weighed in at 15 pounds even (75th percentile) , 25 1/2 inches (90th percentile), and 16 3/4 for her head measurements (90th percentile). Natalie also has terrible spit up issues and seems to suffer from heartburn of sorts so we are trying out Zantac to see if that will help her overall disposition.

I want my sweet calm baby back. These last few weeks have been trying and I can't see it getting any easier any time soon. She used to love her car seat, now she screams the minute you put her in it. I have to hold her all day and she wants nothing to do with anyone except for me so I don't get much of a break. Not that I don't love spending time with her, but even to type this, I am listening to her scream because she wants nothing to do with her daddy. It's very frustrating and I hope I am not spoiling her and creating bigger problems down the road.

Natalie is doing well developmentally, babbles a storm, loves to sit up, smiles, coos, reaches out for my face and her favorite toys, everything goes in her mouth, she stands with mommys balancing help, and oh so much more... but I must cut this list short and get back to my sweet baby.

P.S. Is anyone else having problems with a previously smiley baby putting on only shocked faces for the camera?

and now for the best part... pictures!Collapse )

Another 4 month update [Aug. 17th, 2007|11:15 pm]
For parents of babies born in April 2007
we finally had our four month appt today, almost two weeks late. We had some things in our family happen that delayed it, we had to go out of state for a funeral... while we were out of state, Joey also got his first cold. It was so sad! He is mostly better now aside from being a little stuffed up, but he is doing alot better. we had a bit of a weight loss when he was sick too but it's back to going up so that's good. And he only lost like 3 ounces while he was sick but its still enough to make me go "oh no!"

He's 26 inches long, and 13 lbs, 1 ounce. He's a lonnnnnnng baby!!! He's in alot of his 6 month clothes already because the other ones aren't long enough, lol! He is SUPER ACTIVE for his age, and rolls and scoots across the floor. For two weeks now he's been grabbing things. He loves to hold his toys, and really likes to grab cold bottles like water bottles. The other day we were eating and he was knocking stuff off of the table, wow! He likes to grab our dogs ears already and tries to pet her. His new fascination is with my hubby's beard. He'll rub his hands across it and coo and giggle, it's hilarious. Breastfeeding is still going great, we are so happy for that, and hope that we can continue for a long long time. :D

He also loves to laugh, giggle, smile, and coo so much. I especially find it funny when he "talks" to our dog, molly. People tell me that he's one of the happiest babies they've ever seen. He's really the light of our world :) I've been so exhausted lately from traveling from the funeral, stress from that, taking care of sick baby, and then trying to recover from the trip and get back into the groove of my life, so it's really really nice to have such a lovely baby to love me and make me smile so much!

of course, pictures :)Collapse )

4 month check up [Aug. 17th, 2007|09:36 pm]
For parents of babies born in April 2007

[Current Mood |contentcontent]

Adrian is 14.3 lbs and 24 3/4" long. I think I remember his head circ was 16"? (It was around the 50th percentile.) The pediatrician said that breastfed babies NEED vitamin drops at 4 months because they run out of their stores and bm doesn't supply enough iron. I just smiled and nodded. ::sigh:: I miss the pediatrician we had in Miami. I wish we could find one like her here. :o( He also will only sleep on his tummy. This scares me but my mil (who is currently living with us) assures me (in spanish) that all but one of her four children were tummy sleepers. ::small shrug::

We're still nursing. I'm frustrated. It seems that every time I get my supply back up something happens at work that prevents me from pumping as often or even at all and then we're back to square one. I want to sleep for more than 2 hours at a time. I feel like a zombie.

He can roll over (tummy to back) and loves to play with his feet. He's also a smiley laughy baby. His cradle cap stuff is almost completely gone. (I'm so happy about that because it looked like alligator skin and was kind of creepy.) He loves to "talk". He still waked up several times a night to nurse. (I think it's due to my having a low supply now but who knows?)

He's so cute. Yesterday Gabriel (my 2.5 yr old) said, "love Adyan, love mommy, love mamama, love ama and papa, I love daddy" He loves his little brother! Yay! :o)

Rachel has been in a cranky mood today- she completed refused to nurse this morning. She finally settled in and took some milk around noon but rejected the left breast and wanted the right only. I am puzzled. She has refused to nurse since. This is unlike her.

She does not seem to be sick. She enjoyed her belly time this morning and swinging in her swing this afternoon.

I am getting concerned...

Bed Time? [Aug. 15th, 2007|08:38 pm]
For parents of babies born in April 2007

Hello everyone. I hope everyone's doing well.

The first few months, getting to bed was just a whenever. There was no set time or anything, and there still isn't. My baby tends to go to sleep around 11 or 12 at night which I'm concerned is too late. Once he gets to sleep he tends to sleep until 9am or so and he will nap throughout the day.

Do your babies have a specific bed time? If so, what is it? Are there any suggestions about how I can move up the bed time and make it earlier?

TIA and I can't believe it's been 4 months already! :)

Fun with Samuel [Aug. 10th, 2007|10:01 am]
For parents of babies born in April 2007

x-posted to my journal

During a lull in Samuel's holler fest last night, we had a little fun. Mom had just laid him down on his back in our bed and I bounced up and knelt over him. He lay there, looking at me, with his right fist raised over his head and his other down by his side.

I told him he looked like he was doing semaphore, so I raised my left arm and put my right by my side to mirror him. I played at semaphore as I knelt over him, then stopped again in the same position. "Follow mommy," I told him, as I raised and lowered my right fist.

After a few repetitions, I saw the light go on in his eyes and he raised his left arm so we were mirror images again.

I was so proud of him I cried, "Yay, Samuel!" which was his cue to scream.

*eye roll*

We'll try the mirror game again when he's in a good mood.

For parents of babies born in April 2007

My sister had her baby on Thursday (11lbs 3 oz, 57cm, head circumference of 38.5cm - luckily, he's her fourth!), so the midwife was doing a home visit today, to check up on how she's doing, plus weigh Quinn and do some checks, like his heel prick test. So, while she was here, I took the opportunity to weigh Amie - who (fully dressed), weighed 7.225kg! I rounded down to 7 for the clothes and nappy, but still - that's about 15lbs 4oz I think? I'm not so good at converting to imperial, silly ounces throw me off! She'll be 15 weeks on Monday, so she's doing well. I haven't measured her length lately, but she's almost too big for her bassinette, and she now fills the length of her pram.

She hasn't started rolling yet, but I know that's early :) She can hold her head up quite high, and for quite a while on tummy time now, and is starting to lean to the side, in readiness to roll. When she's lying on my chest, and I'm lying down, she can roll off, but I figure that's due to the not so flat nature of my body :)

She's such a happy, easy baby, and very social, grabbing out for things more and more. I've gone to the movies a few times, and have taken her with me each time, and she loves it! The big screen certainly mesmerises her, but she's very good during it, even if she's not looking at or facing the screen, so hopefully that'll continue, so that I can still go out occasionally. I don't mind breastfeeding her during the movie!

Today, I cracked right up, when I saw just how fast my milk can come out. While feeding her this morning, she pulled off the boob and as she did, the milk kept squirting out! I wasn't even touching my breast, but it was shooting out like a fire hydrant someone had turned on. I haven't had that happen before - but no wonder she pulled off, if it was coming that fast!

3 month update a bit late! [Aug. 3rd, 2007|03:07 pm]
For parents of babies born in April 2007

[Current Mood |blahblah]

My little girl is about 3 and a half months old and is doing super! She amazes me everyday. Natalie constantly rolls over from her back to her tummy and vise versa. She also loves to babble and about two weeks ago started combining the vowel and consonant sounds. Natalie spins herself in circles and is almost crawling already! She loves to stand on her own (well, we she holds our finger with her hand and she does the rest... she also is starting to show signs of teething - drooling, chewing on EVERYTHING, and while shes always done great breastfeeding shes getting testy about it... and from what I have read and been told its probably because the suction is hurting her a bit with the teeth starting to come in.

She was baptized in the middle of July and has traveled all over since she was born - Indiana, Michigan, and Kentucky! She will be going to Alabama and Tennessee next week when I go to visit family. She is flourishing and seems to be extremely happy and I couldn't be more proud.

Of course I take tons of photos everyday because I don't want to miss a minute. She was about 8 lbs 2 oz at birth and I think shes probably about 15 pounds or so now - we are due for an appointment in 2 weeks so I won't know for sure until then! (She was 12 lb 7 oz at 2 months). She is also growing in length - shes already almost 26 inches long!

P.S. Does anyone have any suggestions for diapers.. my situation - I started her out in Huggies and those seemed to fit goofy so I went to Pampers Swaddlers which have been doing fine, but now shes mobile enough those are leaking and size 2s are still a bit big so most of the "mobile baby diapers" are still huge on her! Any ideas?

And onto the best part... pictures....Collapse )

Playtime [Jul. 30th, 2007|02:23 pm]
For parents of babies born in April 2007

Hi everyone!

I hope everyone's doing well. I was just wondering about playtime. What things do you do when you play with your baby? I'm sort of at a loss. I will prop my son on the bed and show him rattles and other small toys. He seems to like it. I also have a baby einstein activity gym where he can lay on the floor and look up at objects hanging down.

We try to do tummy time, but Dylan hates it. He starts fussing and crying. I'm just wondering if I should be doing more with him during playtime. Really I am running out of things to do during the day with him. He'll get up, eat, stay up for a little while, then take a nap. I try to get playtime in, but I'm never quite sure what I should be doing.

And also, I was reading about developmental milestones for a 4 month old. Just wondering how many babies have started grasping things and putting them in their mouths? How many babies have rolled over or can support themselves on their hands and lift their heads up 90 degrees while on their tummy?

This is a sort of disjointed post, I know.

Oh and here's an update on how Dylan is doingCollapse )
